Farm to Fridge. Meet your Meat.
- The facts about how meat goes from animal to sandwich is horrifying. All of this information was collected from Farm to Fridge, along with Food Inc.- videos that express concern for the way these animals are being treated.
Pigs: From the moment they are born, they are torn away from their mothers, their testicles are riped out and their tails are cut off, all without pain killers. Many of these young lives are lost from the mutilations.
While pregnant with their young, the mother pigs are kept in a small metal stalls that they barley fit into. They can sometimes develop open soars that have the chance of being infected.
Pigs are physically abused in order to "make them move" where the workers want them to go. Pigs that aren't growing fast enough or who become sick are killed.
Common Killing: Piglets are thrown into tubs where they are suffocated by Carbon Dioxide.
They have also been killed by being repeatedly slammed into the ground head first
Grown pigs have been hung from fork lifts, strangling them until dead
Pigs raised for meat, only live for about 5 months. Until they are sent to slaughter.
At slaughter they are hit in the head with a steel rod, hung upside down, and their throats are slit.
Eggs and Chicken: Male and Female chicks are separated and sorted through just minutes after being born. The males are killed within hours of hatching. They are thrown into grinding machines while they are still alive. They are also put into garbage cans and suffocated.
Females are forced to live in crowded cages, so to reduce pecking, a hot iron or laser removes a good chunk of the chicks beak. Most of these animals will never see daylight, or breath fresh air.
Chickens and Turkeys: These birds have been bred to grow so big so fast, that they can't even walk. Sick and injured birds have their necks broken, others are clubbed to death. On their way to slaughter, these birds are roughly handled, so rough that they have broken bones and bruises.
At the slaughter house, they are hung upside down by their fragile legs, they are then run through an electric bat of boiling water that leaves them paralyzed, but not quite dead. They are then pulled across a blade that cuts open their neck.
Dairy: Mother cows produce milk for their own young, but once the calfs are born, they are torn away from their mothers and killed. Mother cows are kept confined, and spend their entire life on hard ground, while others are crammed into crowded mud lots.
Young cows have their horns burned off, and their tails cut off all without pain killers.
"Spent Dairy Cows" are loaded onto trucks and sent to slaughter.
Beef: Cows raised for meat go through different types of mutilations, this including, branding with a hot iron.
They spend the rest of their lives in over crowded pins standing in their own waste.
The cattle are fully conscious when their throats are cut open, and their limbs cut off.
Fish/Seafood: 1/5 fish eaten in worldwide today is raised in disease filled captivity.
The extreme changes in pressure fish undergo while being pulled up into the fishing boats, can cause their swim bladders to explode and their eyes to pop out.
Millions of dolphins, sea turtles and other sea life are unintentionally killed.
In the first video below, a fish is shown being de-scaled, while still alive.
Food Inc is a documentary that shows more on the inside the food production and how it affects the people who count on the industry as a work source.
